Aval - Beaten/Flattened Rice Flakes, is nothing but raw rice grains flattened into dry, thin and flat flakes. These Beaten Rice flakes are made from various rice varieties and also the thickness of the flakes varies. This is an easily digestible form of raw rice commonly used to prepare a wide range of snacks and dishes in every possible regional variation of Indian Cuisine. Traditionally these Rice Flakes were made using Ural and Ulakka. I still remember my Grandmother making Aval in this arduous method.
Every state and even neighbouring countries of India have different versions of recipes with Beaten Rice Flakes. When speaking about Aval/Beaten Rice Flakes recipes from a Kerala household, Aval Nanachathu, Aval Vilayichathu, Aval Ada, Pazham Nirachathu etc., tops the list. Least to mention the Prasadham - Avilum Malarum which has a mixture of Aval and Malar Pori, dry fruits and banana.
When it comes to quick snacking, this Aval Nanachathu is a great option. This recipe of Aval Nanachathu is a simple Kerala style sweetened Rice Flakes prepared with Aval/Beaten Rice Flakes, Sugar and Grated Coconuts. Aval Nanachathu requires no cooking. If you are leaving the mixture for a bit of a long time, then no need to sprinkle water to soak the Aval/Beaten Rice, the water from Coconuts and Sugar will gradually soak and soften the rice flakes. If you are serving it with Bananas, cut them into small pieces and add it to the Aval Nanachathu just before serving.
I remember my mother making this quick palaharam during evenings and I have always loved to eat it up with Bananas. This batch of Aval I used in this recipe is the one made with Kerala Rose Matta Rice which my mother packed for me, while I was home last time. And least to mention the batch of Bananas from my backyard to go along with this Aval Nanachathu.

HOW TO MAKE AVAL NANACHATHU / SWEETENED BEATEN RICE FLAKES
INGREDIENTS :
Aval/Beaten Rice Flakes - 1 CupGrated Coconut - 1/2 Cup
Sugar - 1/4 Cup
Bananas - 2-3(Optional)
METHOD :
- Combine Aval, grated Coconuts and Sugar in a wide bowl and mix well.
- Drizzle few teaspoons of water, if necessary.
- Leave this aside for 1-2 hours.
- Serve Aval Nanachathu - Sweetened Beaten Rice Flakes as such or along with Bananas.

NOTES :
- Aval Nanachathu-Sweetened Beaten Rice Flakes requires no cooking.
